It has significant interaction with Calcium and Magnesium, promoting their mobilization and preventing nutrient lockouts. It is essential in soils with a pH below 6.0 and above 7.0, as it increases cationic exchange, helping to regulate substrate pH. The soil must be moist before application for best results. Interestingly, trichomes are composed of 13% to 60% silicon, serving as the plant's primary mechanical barrier against solar radiation. Application can be done in two ways: as a protective measure against stem fungi, apply directly to induce silicon crystal formation; and via irrigation for direct plant absorption. It is essential in hydroponic crops due to the number of problems that can arise from fungi and the complete absence of silicon in this type of cultivation.
