It increases resistance to adverse conditions such as excessive cold, heat, drought, salinity, and mineral toxicity, leading to improved growth and high pollen fertility. Silicon acts as a containment barrier in areas where the plant is infected by fungi; it accumulates and prevents their entry, provided the silicon is present to act immediately. In the cell walls of roots, it acts as a preventative against parasite and pathogen attacks. It has a strong interaction with Calcium and Magnesium, promoting their mobilization and preventing nutrient lock-up. It is essential in soils with a pH below 6.0 and above 7.0, as it increases cation exchange, helping to regulate the substrate pH. The soil should be moist before application for best results. Interestingly, trichomes are composed of 13% to 60% silicon, and they are the plant's main mechanical barrier against solar radiation. Application can be done in two ways: as a protective measure against stem fungi, apply directly to induce silicon crystal production, or through irrigation for direct absorption by the plant. It is essential in hydroponic crops due to the number of problems that can arise from fungi and the complete absence of silicon in such crops. It is also particularly recommended for coconut fiber crops and any cultivation system where we want to protect and increase the cation exchange capacity.
